Meditation for 2008

Luke 10:38-42

A sign on one side of my soul says MANY THINGS. A host of thoughts are piled up there: worries, to-do lists, memories, complications, the inventory knows no end. But they all have one common denominator, they’re petty, foolish and so stupidly temporal. And they devour my life. Their fruit is weariness, unhappiness, resentment, bitterness. Like little specks of dust, thousands of them, they get into my inner eyes and make them blind; they clutter and stun my mind with their insistence.

Then on the other side of my heart is a quiet corner, one I have been embarrassingly absent from lately. It is a serene place where it’s all about sitting at Your feet. You and only You are that ONE THING. You are so glorious, so wise, so impressively beyond time. You hold my life still with your very presence.

How desperately I want to sit quietly in the ONE THING corner—and just rest. But so easily, my eyes peek over to the MANY THINGS side (just to make sure they’re not getting out of control, of course!) and they come rushing over like irritating little gnats to squeeze the life out of my soul and soon my heart throbs and aches again with the cares of this world.

LORD Jesus, may You grow so, in my soul, that all those MANY THINGS drop dead in the face, the Radiant Face of the ONE THING, Lord. You are my One and only ONE THING.
